Who discovered Florida?

Juan Ponce de León (1474-1521), a Spanish explorer and one-time colonial governor of Puerto Rico, is credited with discovering Florida on April 2, 1513. Later chronicles included the suggestion that he was looking for the fabled "fountain of youth" that some adventurers believed existed in the New World. Although Juan was the first to claim Florida for the Spanish crown it is likely that other Spaniards had already sailed from Puerto Rico in search of Native slaves and gold.
